Open Door Learning Center (ODLC) Preschool How We Work

Open Door Learning Center (ODLC) is focused on improving preschool and kindergarten services throughout Loudoun County. Our daily schedule offers a wide variety of activities including: learning exploration centers, gross and fine motor skill development, music activities, social skills building, library time, outside play, and more! Moreover, our experienced teachers give individualized attention to our early learners at a low student to teacher ratio (typically 6:1). We also have potty training for all ages, so your early learner does not need to be toilet-trained to join ODLC!

At ODLC, we believe that Early Intervention and Preschool programs excel when there are skilled, well trained, and experienced staff, very small classes, low child to teacher ratios, and an atmosphere of nurture and respect for each child’s individuality. We maintain structured and predictable classroom settings, where learning is supported through the child’s exploration of the environment, recognition of his/her interests, hands-on activities, opportunities for socialization, and the continual enhancement of communication and cognition. We are informed by the best practices in early childhood education including detailed knowledge of developmental milestones, appropriate development behaviors, and techniques and measures designed to assist children in gaining autonomy and finding an appreciation of the joy of learning. We take our children on what may be their first foray into the wider world and its opportunities. We use the principles of positive reinforcement, individuation, scaffolding, and breaking down complex tasks into smaller, manageable pieces so as to give every child a sense of accomplishment and achievement. Our Child Study Teams regularly discuss each child’s needs and goals and makes recommendations for future implementation. Our daily schedules provide for pre-literacy and pre-math instruction, as well as, development of fine and gross motor skills, and time for imaginative and symbolic play. All our children participate in enrichment programs in music and in dance, nature, as well as, visits from a specially trained therapy dog. Each day there is an outdoor play period in our well-equipped playground. Our summer program highlights water play and more relaxed activities.
